Things to do

Stavanger offers a lot to do and see. Below we will list some greats ideas of day trips or things to see while you visit.

Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock)

This is a must see when visiting Stavanger. A beautiful rock formation towering 604m (1980ft) over Lysefjorden. The hike is easily accessible and can be done in 3-5 hours return depending on your fitness. It is a roughly 40 minute drive from Stavanger via the Ryfast tunnel, the worlds deepest and longest undersea tunnel.

Gamle Stavanger (Old Stavanger)

Gamle Stavanger offers a quieter alternative to the city’s busier attractions, consisting of over 170 restored 18th-century wooden houses. In the summer, the neighborhood is particularly scenic as the residents' gardens and flower boxes are in full bloom against the white timber walls. You can walk the cobblestone streets in about 20 minutes, making it an easy add-on to a day spent downtown.

Flørlitrappene (Flørli Stairs)

Located along the Lysefjord, this site features the world’s longest wooden staircase with exactly 4,444 steps. The hike up the old hydro-power stairs is physically demanding but offers a unique historical perspective and great fjord views.

Lysefjorden Cruise

For those who prefer to see the fjords without the heavy hiking, several operators offer boat tours departing from the city center. These cruises pass directly under Pulpit Rock and navigate close to waterfalls and seal-populated islands. This is a beautiful way to see the true scale of the surrounding mountains.

airbnb

Stavanger and the surrounding area provides some incredible locations through airbnb which can be a great way of seeing more than the four walls of a hotel room. Think Norwegian culture showcased in a home or garden, to be explored and enjoyed. Pairing up with others who will also be attending the wedding is a great way to save some money on not only accomodation, as well as car rentals if needed.
